Hydro jetting in Santa Monica: cleaning that prepares the repair

A cable machine drills a hole through a blockage; a jetter removes the blockage. For a sewer line in Santa Monica that is to be inspected or lined, the difference decides whether the camera sees the pipe and whether the liner bonds to it. This page covers what jetting does and where it fits.

What jetting is

A hydro jetter is a pump, a long hose and a nozzle. The pump drives water through the hose at pressures measured in thousands of pounds per square inch; the nozzle at the end directs most of that water backward in a cone, which both propels the hose up the pipe and scours the wall behind it, and some forward to break up what is ahead. The hose is fed into the lateral from the cleanout, worked to the main and drawn back, and everything it loosens is flushed downstream. For a sewer line in Santa Monica it is the difference between a pipe that has been opened and a pipe that has been cleaned.

Roots, scale and grease

The three things that choke laterals in this county respond differently. Roots entering clay joints form mats across the bore; a root-cutting nozzle shears them off at the wall and the stream carries them out. Scale, the mineral and rust crust inside old cast iron, is thicker and harder; a chain or rotating nozzle at the right pressure breaks it loose so the pipe's true inner surface is exposed. Grease from a kitchen cools into a lining of its own; it needs volume and heat more than force, and a wide nozzle peels it away in sheets. The technician chooses the nozzle for the pipe material and the problem, since the wrong one either leaves the job half done or works too hard on a weak pipe.

Why it comes before the camera

An inspection of a dirty line records dirt. Jetting first means the camera sees the pipe wall, the joints, the cracks and the channel in the iron, and the written finding is based on the real condition. In a line that is backing up, the jetting is also the fix for today; the recording that follows shows whether today's fix will hold. jetting and drain cleaning in Santa Monica by TSR Trenchless, Inc. describes how jetting and inspection are booked together around Santa Monica.

Why it comes before the liner

Cured-in-place lining depends on the resin bonding to clean, bare host pipe. Any root fiber, scale or grease left on the wall becomes a void behind the liner. Lining crews jet to bare wall, run the camera to confirm it, and only then measure and install. On a cast iron line that means removing decades of scale, which is why the jetting pass before a lining job is longer and more thorough than a maintenance cleaning. The same is true before a sectional sleeve, which has to bond at the one spot that matters.

Pressure, pipe and the technician's judgment

Jetting is not a setting on a dial but a choice made for each line. A sound plastic lateral takes full pressure; a brittle clay line from the 1920s or an iron line thinned by rust is worked at lower pressure with a gentler nozzle, in more passes, with the camera checking between them. A pipe that cannot stand up to water is a pipe that has already failed, and the inspection will say so. The judgment that goes into those settings is what separates a cleaning that prepares a repair from one that causes the next call.

What jetting cannot do

Jetting clears; it does not repair. It cannot close a joint, straighten a belly or restore a collapsed section, and a pipe that is jetted clear and left alone will fill with roots again from the same open joints. A contractor who sells repeated jetting as the answer to a rooted clay lateral is selling a subscription. The honest sequence is to jet, record, and then fix what the recording shows, whether that is a sleeve, a liner or a new pipe. the county coverage page lists the cities around Santa Monica where that sequence is available.

Maintenance jetting for commercial lines

Restaurants, laundries and multi-unit buildings often put their drain lines on a jetting interval, every few months for a busy kitchen, to keep grease from narrowing the bore between cleanings. The interval is set from the camera, which shows how fast the line coats. Each visit ends with a short recording so the owner can see the line is clear and catch any defect early. The installer standards that govern cleaning before a lining job are described at the installer's verified CIPP listing.

Questions we hear about hydro jetting

Can jetting damage an old pipe?+

Not when the pressure and nozzle are matched to the pipe. A fragile clay or badly corroded cast iron line is jetted at reduced pressure with a nozzle chosen for it, and the camera checks the result. A pipe so weak that water pressure threatens it is already a replacement job, which the inspection will show.

Will jetting get rid of roots for good?+

It removes the roots that are in the pipe now. The joints they entered through stay open, and the tree will send new growth back within a season or two. Lining after jetting seals those joints; jetting alone is maintenance, not a repair.

Is jetting different for a restaurant line?+

The nozzle and the pressure are chosen for grease rather than roots, and the volume of water is higher. The grease is flushed to the interceptor, which may need pumping afterward. Kitchens on a maintenance schedule are jetted on a set interval before the line narrows.

How long does a jetting visit take?+

An hour or two for a house lateral, including the camera pass afterward. Commercial lines with heavy grease or long runs take longer and are often scheduled after hours.
