Sewer pipe bursting in Santa Monica: a new line along the old path
Some sewer lines in Santa Monica are past saving from inside: collapsed, crushed, sagging into a belly, or simply too small for the building above them. Pipe bursting replaces those lines without opening the ground between the house and the street.

The line that cannot be lined
A cured-in-place liner takes the shape of the pipe it is cured in, so it cannot help a pipe that has lost its shape. Across Santa Monica the lines that reach that point share a few stories: a clay lateral crushed by a truck parked on a soft parkway, cast iron so corroded the top of the pipe has fallen in, a plastic line that bellied when a trench settled and now holds standing water between the house and the street, a lateral that was undersized the day it was installed and has been fighting the house ever since. Each of these is a replacement, and pipe bursting is how a replacement is done without a trench.
How the pull works
Two pits are dug: a launch pit, usually at the house end of the lateral, and a receiving pit near the property line or at the main. A pulling cable, or a string of steel rods, is threaded along the old line so that it reaches from pit to pit. At the launch pit a cone-shaped bursting head is attached to the cable with the new polyethylene pipe fused to its tail. A hydraulic pulling unit in the receiving pit draws the head through the old line; the head splits the old pipe and pushes the fragments outward into the soil, and the new pipe follows into the space it opens. The run between the pits is never excavated. The pull on a house lateral is a matter of an hour or two.
The new pipe
High-density polyethylene is the material of choice because it arrives as a continuous length, fused in the yard into a single piece with no joints at all. Nothing for a root to find, nothing to corrode, and enough flexibility to ride out the ground movement that cracked the clay before it. The pipe can match the old size or exceed it, which is why bursting is the only trenchless route to a larger lateral. At the pits the new pipe is connected to the house drain and to the main with fittings designed for the transition, and those two connections are the only places the city inspector needs to see.
Where it fits and where it does not
Bursting needs a run that is close to straight, since the head will not follow a tight bend, and it needs room at both ends for a pit. A long straight lateral from a house to the street is the classic case. A line with several sharp turns, or one that passes directly beneath a foundation with no place for a pit, is a lining job instead, and a lateral with one bad spot in otherwise good pipe needs only a sectional sleeve. pipe bursting service for Santa Monica by TSR Trenchless, Inc. describes where bursting is used around Santa Monica and the rest of the county, and the inspection-first procedure shows how the camera survey settles the choice before any pit is dug.
Hard ground and hillside lots
The soil around the old pipe matters to the pull. Sandy ground near the coast and the loose fill of a settled trench give way easily; the dense clay of the basin floor and the hardpan of the high desert resist, and the pulling unit works harder for the same run. A hillside lateral that runs straight down a slope can be burst from a pit at the top to a pit at the bottom with the line's own grade helping, while one that switchbacks across the slope is a lining job. The camera survey and the locate settle this before any pit is dug.
Permits and the public side
Because the receiving pit is often near the property line, and because the new pipe connects to the main, bursting usually involves the city's public works department as well as the plumbing permit. The installer files both, schedules the connection inspection and restores the pit areas. Traffic control is minimal compared to a trench, since the pit footprint is small and the roadway is not cut.
What to expect in the proposal
The camera recording showing why lining was ruled out, the pit locations marked on a sketch, the pipe material and size, the method of fusion and connection, the warranty, the permit plan and the crew doing the work, and afterward the post-installation video of the new line from end to end. The installer standards behind that list are set out at the trenchless methods reference.

Questions we hear about pipe bursting
How big are the pits?+
Large enough for the bursting head and the new pipe to enter and exit, typically a few feet square at the house connection and near the property line or the main. They are placed in dirt or landscaping wherever possible so paving is not cut.
Will bursting damage other utilities?+
The old pipe is fractured outward only a few inches into the surrounding soil, so a properly located gas, water or irrigation line is not affected. Utilities are marked before the pits are dug, and the camera survey shows where the lateral runs relative to them.
Can my line be made larger?+
Yes. Upsizing is the one thing only bursting can do without a trench. A four-inch lateral can be replaced with a six-inch one, which is common when a house is enlarged or a commercial bay changes to food service.
Is the new pipe really better than clay or cast iron?+
High-density polyethylene is fused into a single continuous length with no joints for roots to enter, it does not corrode, and it flexes with ground movement rather than cracking. Its rated life runs well beyond that of the material it replaces.
How do I find out if bursting is the right fix?+
