Sewer camera inspection in Santa Monica: the step before any repair
Every sewer repair in Santa Monica starts with a camera, and the recording it produces is the document the whole job rests on. This page explains how the inspection is done, what the technician is looking for, and what you should expect to receive.

Why the camera comes first
No one can tell from the sidewalk whether a sewer line in Santa Monica is cracked clay, channeled iron or settled plastic, or whether the problem is one joint or the whole run. A self-leveling camera on a push rod, fed through the cleanout and along the lateral to the main, answers all of it in an hour and leaves a recording that the owner keeps. Every method on this site, lining, bursting, sleeves, even the decision to dig, is chosen from that recording. A proposal written without one is a guess.
Cleaning before looking
A camera pushed into a pipe full of roots and grease sees roots and grease. For an accurate inspection the line is first cleared, by cable for a quick look or by hydro jetting when the pipe is to be lined, so the lens sees pipe wall. In a line that is backing up, the cleaning is also the relief; the camera then shows why it backed up and whether it will again.
What the technician is watching for
The recording is reviewed for material first, since the house's build year is only a guess until the pipe is seen. Then for defects: open or offset joints, circumferential and longitudinal cracks, root masses and the joints they entered through, the channeled floor of corroded cast iron, scale that narrows the bore, grease, sags where water stands after the camera passes, and the condition of the connection at the main. Each one is logged with its distance from the cleanout and, using the locator above ground, its depth. The technician also notes the slope, the number and position of branch connections, and anything that would affect a repair, such as a bend too tight for bursting or a stretch under a slab.
The locator and the marks on the ground
The camera head carries a small transmitter. A receiver walked across the yard tracks it, so the path of the lateral is painted on the surface and the depth read at each defect. Those marks are what allow a sectional sleeve to be positioned to the foot, a bursting pit to be dug in the right place, and a hillside lateral to be understood at all. On a lot in Santa Monica with a long or winding run, the locate can be the most valuable part of the visit.
Hillsides, slabs and long runs
The inspection is harder, and more valuable, on the lots this county is known for. A hillside lateral may descend at a grade the push rod has to be fed carefully down and recover from, with the locator the only way to know where the pipe actually travels under the slope. An under-slab run is entered through a pulled toilet or a cleanout in the garage and the branch connections are counted on the way, because they are what a liner will have to reinstate. A long lateral to a distant main may exceed one reel and be inspected from both ends. Each of these shapes the repair plan, and each is recorded so the owner can see it.
Reading the report
You should receive the full recording, not a clip, and a written finding that lists each defect with distance and depth, names the pipe material, gives the length of the run and states a conclusion: the line is sound, needs a point repair, is a lining candidate, has to be replaced, or needs a dig at one spot. A report that jumps straight to a price without those elements is missing the part that justifies the price. camera inspections in Santa Monica by TSR Trenchless, Inc. explains how inspections are scheduled around Santa Monica, and how the inspection leads into the repair shows how the finding turns into a repair plan.
Inspections for sales and for records
A pre-purchase inspection follows the same procedure and produces the same recording, which the buyer, the seller and the escrow agent can all view. Many sellers in older neighborhoods now have one done before listing. After any repair, a final camera run records the finished pipe, and that video belongs with the property records alongside the warranty. The documentation standard the network's installers follow, including what a report must contain, is described at the reference for the terms in a sewer report.

Questions we hear about sewer camera inspection
Do I need an inspection if the drain is only slow?+
A slow drain is the earliest sign a lateral gives. Roots, scale or a partial collapse narrow the pipe long before it blocks, and the camera finds which one it is while the fix is still simple. Cabling the drain clear without looking leaves the cause in place.
Should I get a sewer inspection when buying a house in Santa Monica?+
Yes, for any house older than about forty years, and many buyers do it for newer ones. The lateral is the one part of the property the general inspection cannot see, and a replacement can cost more than most other repairs a buyer negotiates over.
Does the inspection find where the pipe is under the yard?+
Yes. The camera head carries a transmitter, and a locator above ground follows it, marking the line and reading its depth at each defect. Those marks are what let a sectional repair or a bursting pit be placed precisely.
What if there is no cleanout?+
The camera can go in through a roof vent or a pulled toilet, though the view is shorter and the run harder. If the property lacks a cleanout the report will recommend adding one, which also makes any later repair simpler.
How do I schedule an inspection?+
