Sewer pipe lining in Santa Monica: what the crew actually does

Lining sounds like one step and is really six. For a lateral in Santa Monica, each of those steps decides whether the new pipe lasts for decades or fails at the first branch connection. This page follows the job from the measurement to the final camera pass.

Why lining suits this county

The ground under Santa Monica and its neighbors is the reason cured-in-place lining has become the default sewer repair here. A liner goes in through an opening the size of a cleanout, follows the bends of a lateral descending a hillside, passes under a slab, a driveway and the public sidewalk, and leaves all of them intact. Clay joints opened by decades of ground movement, cast iron channeled by corrosion and plastic cracked at a settled joint are all sealed by the same continuous wall. The job is finished in a day on a typical lot. What follows is how that day is spent.

Step one: measure and clean

The camera run that located the defects also gives the crew the length of the lateral, its diameter, the position of each branch connection and the angle of every bend. The liner is cut to that length with margin at both ends. The line is then hydro jetted to bare wall, because resin bonds to clean pipe and not to scale, grease or root hair, and a final camera pass confirms it is clean. Any protruding root or offset that would snag the liner is trimmed with a cutter.

Step two: wet-out

The felt or fiberglass tube is saturated with resin, either in the shop under vacuum or on the truck, so every fiber carries resin and no air is trapped. The resin is mixed to a cure schedule that fits the day's temperature and the length of the run. From this point the clock is running: the liner has to be installed and cured before the resin begins to set on its own.

Step three: installation

Air or water pressure drives the wet liner into the pipe by inversion, turning it inside out as it advances, pressing resin against the pipe wall as it goes, or it is pulled into place and then inflated with a calibration tube. Either way the liner ends up tight against the old pipe along its full length, through every bend, with its ends positioned where the camera said they should be.

Step four: the cure

Heat or light turns the resin into a hard thermoset. Hot water circulated through the liner, steam, or an ultraviolet light train drawn through it each work; they differ in speed and in the liner material they suit. The crew holds pressure and temperature for the specified time, usually one to a few hours on a house lateral, then cools the liner down under control so it does not shrink away from the wall. CIPP lining in Santa Monica from TSR Trenchless, Inc. covers how lining jobs are scheduled in and around Santa Monica, and the county service area lists the rest of the county the same crews serve.

Between the steps: the clock and the weather

Two things run through the whole day. The first is the resin's own timetable: once mixed it is curing slowly whether the crew is ready or not, so the measurement, the cleaning and the staging are all done before the wet-out begins. The second is temperature. A hot afternoon in the valley shortens the working time, a cool morning near the coast lengthens the cure, and the crew sets the resin formulation and the cure schedule for the conditions on the lot that day rather than for a figure from a catalog.

Step five: reinstatement

The cured liner is a solid tube, which means every branch connection, the kitchen line, the laundry, a second bathroom, is sealed shut until it is reopened. A robotic cutter, positioned by the camera at each recorded branch, cuts the liner wall away so the branch flows again. The ends of the liner are trimmed flush at the cleanout and at the main.

Step six: the record

A final camera run records the finished pipe end to end: the smooth wall, every reinstated branch, the terminations. That recording, with the material specification, the cure log and the warranty, is the owner's proof of what was installed. Keep it with the property records; it is what answers the next inspector. The verified-installer standard that calls for exactly this documentation is described at the installer's verified CIPP profile.

Questions we hear about sewer pipe lining (cipp)

Does the liner reduce the size of my pipe?+

By a small amount. The cured wall measures well under half an inch, which leaves a four-inch lateral with nearly all of its bore, and because the new surface is smooth and jointless the line carries flow at least as well as the rough old pipe did.

Can lining be done through the cleanout, or do you have to dig?+

Through the cleanout in most cases. If the property has no cleanout, one is installed at the house end, which is a small hole in the yard or garage rather than a trench. The far end of the liner finishes inside the lateral or at the main without excavation.

How is the resin cured, and does the method matter?+

Circulated hot water, steam and ultraviolet light each cure the resin into the finished pipe. Steam and UV are faster; hot water is the older method and still reliable. The choice depends on the liner material and the length of the run, and the proposal should name the method and the cure time.

What about the branch lines that join the lateral?+

They are reopened from inside after the cure. A robotic cutter guided by the camera cuts through the liner at each connection, and the recording confirms every branch flows. A missed reinstatement is the most common lining mistake, which is why the post-job video matters.

How do I arrange a lining quote?+
