Sectional point repair in Santa Monica: a sleeve where the damage is

Not every failing sewer line in Santa Monica needs a full liner. A pipe that is sound for sixty feet and broken for two is a candidate for a sectional repair, a short cured sleeve placed exactly over the defect. This page explains how that is done and how to tell when it is the right call.

One joint, not the whole lateral

Camera recordings from laterals around Santa Monica often show the same picture: a pipe that is in fair shape along most of its length, with one place where things went wrong. A clay joint under a parkway tree that roots have pried open. A single crack where a water line was trenched across the lateral years ago. An offset at the spot where the backfill under a driveway settled. The rest of the pipe may have decades left in it. Lining the whole run would fix the problem, but so would a repair a few feet long placed exactly where the camera found it, and at a fraction of the disruption.

How a sleeve is placed

A sectional repair uses the same resin and fabric as a full cured-in-place liner, cut to a short length. The sleeve is wrapped around an inflatable packer, saturated with resin, and pushed or pulled into the cleaned lateral from the cleanout. The camera, which already measured the distance to the defect, guides the packer until the sleeve is centered on it. The packer is inflated, pressing the sleeve against the pipe wall and bridging the crack or the open joint, and held there while the resin cures, usually with ambient heat or warm water inside the packer. When the cure is complete the packer is deflated and withdrawn, leaving the hardened sleeve bonded in place. The camera goes back in to confirm the result. On a house lateral the whole operation fits inside a morning.

What it fixes well

A sleeve is the right tool for a single root intrusion at a joint, a circumferential crack, a short length of channeled cast iron, a small offset, or a leaking joint letting groundwater in. It is especially useful under a slab, where it is installed through a pulled toilet or a garage cleanout and nothing in the house is disturbed, and under a driveway or sidewalk where a dig would mean concrete work. It is also used as a companion to other methods: sealing a joint at the end of a liner, or repairing the one bad spot in a line that was otherwise burst or lined years ago.

When one sleeve is not enough

The honest limit is the condition of the rest of the pipe. If the video shows several defects spread along the lateral, or a cast iron line that is channeled from end to end with one place worse than the others, a series of sleeves costs more and protects less than a single liner would. Roots that have entered at one joint have usually started on the next. The written finding that comes with the recording should count the defects and say plainly whether the line is a one-spot repair or a lining job. sectional sewer repair for Santa Monica by TSR Trenchless, Inc. explains how that call is made for properties in Santa Monica, and the Los Angeles County service page covers the rest of the county.

A common pairing

On many properties the point repair is the second step of a two-part plan. The jetting and camera visit relieves the backup, finds the single open joint that let the roots in, and the sleeve goes in the same week. A year later the camera is run again as a check, and if nothing new has appeared the rest of the pipe is left to carry on. Owners who want insurance against the next joint can choose a full liner then or later; the sleeve does not get in the way of either, since a liner cures over it like any other section of wall.

Cost, disruption and paperwork

Because a point repair is short, it is the least costly trenchless method and the least disruptive: no pits, no cutting, the drains out of use for a few hours while the sleeve cures. It still comes with the same documentation as any other repair. The proposal should show the recording and the defect's location by distance and depth, the sleeve material and its rating, the warranty on that section and the permit if the city requires one for a repair of that kind. After the cure the post-repair video shows the sleeve in place with clean transitions at both ends. The standard for that documentation is on the verified installer listing for TSR Trenchless, Inc..

Questions we hear about sectional point repair

How long is a sectional sleeve?+

Typically two to six feet, enough to cover the defect with sound pipe on either side for the sleeve to bond to. Longer defects, or several close together, tip the decision toward a full liner.

Will the sleeve create a step inside the pipe?+

A slight one, which is why the ends are tapered and the sleeve is thin. Flow is not obstructed, and the camera confirms the transition after the cure. On a lateral with proper slope it causes no trouble.

Can a point repair be done under a slab or a driveway?+

Yes. The sleeve goes in through the cleanout on a packer and is positioned by the camera, so nothing above the pipe is disturbed. It is the least invasive repair there is for a single under-slab defect.

Is a point repair a permanent fix?+

At that spot, yes; the cured sleeve is the same material as a full liner and carries the same rating. It does not protect the rest of the pipe, so the decision depends on the condition of the line around it, which the video shows.

How do I find out if my line qualifies?+

Call (310) 340-2515 or send the form. The cleaning and camera visit shows whether the problem is one spot or many, and the proposal says which repair fits. Estimates are free; call now.
