Trenchless methods
Trenchless sewer repair in Santa Monica: matching the method to the defect
Trenchless is not one technique but three, and a sewer line in Santa Monica may need any of them. Lining, bursting and sectional sleeves each solve a different kind of failure; this page lays out which is which, so the proposal you receive makes sense.

One word, three repairs
When a plumber in Santa Monica says a sewer line can be fixed without digging, the sentence hides a choice. Cured-in-place lining, pipe bursting and sectional point repair are different processes with different equipment, and each has a range of defects it handles well and a range it cannot touch. A proposal that names the method without explaining why it was chosen is leaving out the most useful part. The choice is made from the camera recording, and the recording should be yours to see.
Lining: a new pipe inside the old one
Cured-in-place lining starts with a tube of felt or fiberglass soaked in resin. It is inverted or pulled into the cleaned lateral from a cleanout or a small access, inflated so it presses against the old pipe wall, and cured with hot water, steam or ultraviolet light until it is a hard, seamless pipe. Any branch lines are then reopened from inside with a cutter. Lining handles cracks, open joints, root entry, channeled cast iron, leaking joints and minor offsets, and it follows bends and changes in pitch, which makes it the method for under-slab lines and for the steep laterals on the county's hillside lots. What it cannot do is straighten a belly or restore a collapsed section, because it copies the shape of whatever it is cured inside.
Bursting: replacing the pipe along its own path
Pipe bursting is the answer when the old line is beyond lining. A cone-shaped head is pulled through the old pipe from a launch pit to a receiving pit, fracturing it outward into the surrounding soil while a new high-density polyethylene pipe follows directly behind. The run between the pits is never opened. It replaces a collapsed, crushed or badly bellied line, and it is the only trenchless way to upsize a lateral, since the new pipe can be larger than the old. Its limits are geometric: the run has to be reasonably straight, and there must be room for a pit at each end, usually at the house connection and near the property line.
Sectional repair: one sleeve, one defect
A line that is sound except for a single cracked joint, a root ball at one spot or a short offset does not need a full liner. A sectional sleeve, a few feet of resin-saturated material on a packer, is positioned at the defect using the camera, inflated and cured there, then the packer is removed. The rest of the pipe is untouched. On a lateral with one known problem this is the least disruptive option of all. trenchless repair in Santa Monica by TSR Trenchless, Inc. describes how these three methods are deployed around the county, and the order in which a crew works shows the sequence a crew follows from the first camera pass to the final recording.
Mixing methods on one lateral
Real laterals in Santa Monica do not always fit one category. A line may be sound from the house to the sidewalk and collapsed under the parkway tree; the plan is then a sleeve or a liner for the sound run and a short burst or dig for the bad section. A long lateral may be lined in two stages from a mid-point cleanout. The proposal should describe the plan segment by segment, with the recording showing why each segment gets the method it does.
When digging is the honest answer
A trenchless contractor who never recommends a trench is not reading the video. A pipe crushed flat under a tree root, a lateral that was never connected properly at the main, a section too deep and too short to justify bursting equipment, or a run in open yard where a day's digging is cheaper than any machine: these call for a shovel, and the proposal should say so. The purpose of a method is to fix the pipe, not to avoid dirt.
Reading the proposal
A proposal for Santa Monica should show the pre-inspection recording, each defect located by distance and depth, the method and the reason it was chosen over the others, the material specification and its rated life, the warranty, the permit plan for the city and the right-of-way, and who will do the work. After the job, the post-repair video closes the file. The standard those documents are measured against is set out at the independent cured-in-place reference.

Questions we hear about trenchless sewer repair
What is the difference between lining and bursting?+
Lining keeps the old pipe and cures a new one inside it; bursting breaks the old pipe apart and pulls a new one through the same path. Lining needs a host pipe that still holds its shape. Bursting does not, but it needs a straight enough run and a pit at each end.
Can a sewer line with several bends be repaired without digging?+
Yes, by lining. The liner is flexible when it goes in and takes the shape of every bend before it cures. Bursting is limited to runs with gentle sweeps, so a lateral with tight turns is a lining job or a mix of lining and a sleeve.
Is trenchless cheaper than digging?+
On a Los Angeles County lot it usually is once the restoration is counted: a trench under a driveway, a slab or the sidewalk costs far more to close up than to dig. On a short run in open dirt, digging can still be the sensible answer, and the proposal should say so when it is.
How long does a lined or burst pipe last?+
Cured-in-place liners and polyethylene bursting pipe are both specified for service lives measured in decades, longer than the clay or cast iron they replace. The exact rating is on the material specification included with the proposal.
How do I find out which method my line needs?+
